Pied Stilt (Poaka)
HabitatStilts are usually found in estuaries or lakes near the coast particularly where the water depth is shallow enough to allow the constant search for food. Nesting occurs either on the coast or on the floodplane of large rivers in the South Island.
IdentificationPied stilts are black on the top of the neck and running down the back with white everywhere else. They are a slender bird with an ungainly walk.
