Terns or Sea Swallows (Tara)


Habitat

Throughout the world Terns are usually associated with the sea and NZ is no different with the exception of the Black Backed Tern which can also be found in river catchments.


Identification

Terns are similar to seagulls but can be distinguished by there smaller size, forked tails and black heads.

Summary

Terns are truly an international traveller although, as is typical of NZ, a few species are found only in NZ. They are playful birds that are frequently seen darting around in the waves on the hunt for food. They are sometimes called Sea Swallows due to there forked tail and aerial acrobatics.
